The Green Gold Youth Climate Summit, held on 31st August 2024, at Wangari Maathai Memorial Park, brought together a passionate group of young climate leaders, advocates, and organizations dedicated to promoting climate resilience and sustainability. Under the theme “Green and Sustainable Living,” the summit was a platform for meaningful discussions on key issues like climate resilience, food sovereignty, and the transformative power of youth-led climate action.
As a partner, the Kheri Environmental Action Network (KEAN International) was deeply involved in organizing and supporting this incredible event, where the voice of the youth was at the forefront. This summit was not just a gathering but a movement that has energized young people to become active participants in the global climate agenda.
The Role of KEAN International
At KEAN International, we believe that youth engagement is critical for tackling the climate crisis. Our programs aim to empower young leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to drive change within their communities. The summit provided the perfect platform to showcase our ongoing efforts, such as Bustani Gardens, Caravan Projects, and Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), which have already made significant contributions to environmental restoration and community resilience.
As one of the key sponsors, our involvement in the summit was instrumental in ensuring the success of the event, supporting everything from logistics to speaker engagements. We believe that partnerships like these are essential for creating lasting impacts in the climate space, especially through collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
Highlights from the Summit
The summit featured a variety of panels, workshops, and interactive sessions that covered diverse topics such as:
- Climate Resilience and Youth Leadership: Focusing on how young people are leading the charge in combating climate impacts, from grassroots movements to international policy.
- Food Sovereignty and Sustainable Agriculture: Discussions centered on the importance of local food systems and regenerative agricultural practices in mitigating the climate crisis.
- Innovation in Climate Action: Showcasing cutting-edge solutions from youth-led startups and organizations tackling climate challenges through technology and innovative practices.
One of the most impactful sessions was the keynote address delivered by KEAN International’s Executive Director, Kaluki Paul, who shared inspiring insights into the critical role of youth in climate action.
Executive Director’s Speech
Kaluki Paul, in his stirring keynote, spoke passionately about the need for youth to take ownership of the climate narrative. Here are key excerpts from his speech:
“To the partners and sponsors who’ve sacrificed their time, resources, and personnel to make this summit possible, we thank you. To the Green Gold Youth Summit secretariat led by Victor Ominde, congratulations. You are examples of what youth can achieve when they come together and plan better.”
He emphasized the role of youth in climate action, urging the delegates to focus on:
- Climate education and awareness: Building co-learning initiatives.
- On-the-ground climate advocacy: Supporting restoration projects and regenerative agriculture.
- Innovation and technology: Adopting early warning systems, energy efficiency, and sustainable food systems.
Kaluki Paul also spoke about the importance of international cooperation as a key driver in global climate action. He underscored that:
“Alone, we can go faster; together, we can go farther. International cooperation necessitates the flow of finance, resources, and technology across countries and regions.”
He also spoke about accelerating progress toward sustainability by collaborating across sectors, taking stock of climate action projects, and calling out those who misuse the climate movement for personal gain.
A Call to Action
Kaluki Paul closed his speech by urging participants to take what they’ve learned and apply it within their communities, emphasizing that:
“Make today count. Make each day count. You are what the world has been waiting for. Use your potential and transform it into meaningful engagement.”
Looking Ahead
The Green Gold Youth Climate Summit is more than a one-time event; it’s the beginning of a larger movement that will continue to grow. KEAN International is committed to supporting youth-led climate initiatives, fostering partnerships, and creating opportunities for young people to make a tangible impact on the environment.
We encourage all summit participants to stay engaged, network, and continue their climate advocacy efforts.
