KEAN International at the Forefront of Green Jobs in Kenya!

Empowering Youth for a Sustainable Future

The KEAN International team recently participated in the National Workshop on Green Jobs and Skills Development at KICC. At KEAN International, we strongly believe in building the capacity of young people and communities, which is why we are excited to be a part of this event. Our team is dedicated to providing the necessary tools and support to help our youth thrive in the green job market of the 21st century.

Green Jobs – A Golden Opportunity

This workshop is an important partnership between the Green Jobs for Youth Pact, which comprises of the International Labour Organization, United Nations Environment Programme, and United Nations Children’s Fund, together with the Kenyan Government and Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA).

Its primary objective is to establish a thriving green economy in Kenya, a country where a staggering 75% of the population is young, and unemployment is a major concern. The workshop aims to equip young Kenyans with the skills required for green jobs, which are crucial to unlocking a sustainable future.

JLA has set an ambitious target of creating 30 million green jobs for African youth by 2033, and this goal can only be realized through collaborative efforts among all sectors, including private, public, and beyond.

The Green Jobs for Youth Pact

The Pact unites employers, governments, educators, and young people themselves to tackle the youth green jobs gap. Their focus is on three key areas:

  • Employment & Entrepreneurship:  Creating pathways for young people to enter the green workforce and launch their green ventures.
  • Education & Green Skills: Equipping youth with the skills needed to succeed in green jobs.
  • Empowerment & Youth Partnerships:  Giving young people a voice and fostering collaboration for a greener future.

Kenya: A Launchpad for Green Jobs in Africa

The Pact recognizes Kenya’s immense potential to lead the way in creating green job opportunities across Africa. This workshop brings together stakeholders from all levels – private and public sectors, development partners, youth-led organizations, policymakers, and research institutions – to assess existing green job policies and chart a course for the future.

What are Green Jobs?

The concept of green jobs revolves around environmental preservation and sustainable practices. With the ongoing shift towards a low-carbon, circular economy, young Africans with adequate green skills have a significant opportunity to prosper in this evolving scenario.

Shaping the Green Jobs Narrative: Inclusive Consultations

The workshop was organized after extensive consultations with various stakeholders such as youth, government, educational institutions, and private and public entities.

Jacob’s Ladder Africa, a key player in the design and facilitation of these forums, has ensured that all voices are heard and represented, making the event an important platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration.
